A Community Mourns: The Tragic Case of Kylee Monteiro
The town of Attleboro is grieving after the heartbreaking loss of Kylee Monteiro, an 18-year-old who had just graduated high school and was expecting her first child. What began as a missing persons case has now become a tragedy that has shaken the community to its core.
A Warning Before She Disappeared
On August 7, Kylee sent a final, chilling message to her sister: “He threw me on the ground, pulled my hair and strangled me. My phone is at 4%, and if I die, it was Greg.” That message named her boyfriend, Gregory Groom, and would be the last anyone heard from her.
When Kylee stopped answering calls and social media went silent, her family feared the worst. Groom reported her missing, but police quickly launched a large-scale search effort with K-9 units, drones, and helicopters.
The Discovery and Arrest
On August 19, investigators found Kylee’s body buried behind a shed on Groom’s property. He has since been arrested and charged with murder, assault and battery on a pregnant victim, and related offenses. Groom pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail, with a probable cause hearing set for September 10.
A Town in Mourning
Kylee’s sister Faith shared her heartbreak: “I lost my sister, and I will never see her again. I never got to say goodbye or tell her that I love her.” Friends remembered Kylee as kindhearted and excited to become a mother. A vigil is planned at the Veterans Memorial Gazebo in Rehoboth, where residents will gather to honor her and her baby, Eleanor.
Raising Awareness
Kylee’s story is also a sobering reminder of the dangers of domestic violence. Community leaders are urging residents to take warning signs seriously and to reach out for help.
