Coyote Sightings Increase in North Attleborough: Town Urges Caution
North Attleborough, MA – Local officials are asking residents to stay alert following a noticeable rise in coyote activity, particularly near the Amvet Boulevard School and surrounding neighborhoods. Reports of sightings have increased in recent weeks, prompting reminders from the town and the North Attleborough Animal Control Department about how to stay safe.
Coyotes are generally shy and avoid humans, but they are known to be opportunistic feeders. As they prepare for the colder months and care for their young, they may wander into residential areas in search of easy food sources. That’s why officials are encouraging residents to pay extra attention—especially when pets or small children are outside.
“We’re not seeing aggressive behavior, but people need to be aware,” said a spokesperson from Animal Control. “Coyotes are part of the environment, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take steps to stay safe.”
Safety Tips for Avoiding Coyote Encounters
Here are simple steps residents can take to minimize the risk of a coyote encounter:
-
Don’t leave food outside – This includes birdseed, pet food, or open compost piles.
-
Keep trash secured – Store garbage in tightly closed bins, preferably indoors.
-
Watch your pets – Keep dogs leashed and supervised, especially during dawn and dusk when coyotes are most active. Cats should stay indoors or in enclosed outdoor spaces.
-
Check your yard – Always look around before letting your dog out, especially at night. Bright outdoor lighting can help deter coyotes.
-
Supervise young kids – Children playing outside should be within view at all times.
What to Do If You See a Coyote
If you come face-to-face with a coyote, don’t panic. Follow these steps to scare it away:
-
Do not run. Instead, stand tall, wave your arms, and make loud noises to appear larger and more threatening.
-
Use deterrents. Bang objects together, blow a whistle, or spray water. Flashing bright lights can also help.
-
Throw objects near, not at. Tossing items in the coyote’s direction without hitting it can encourage it to leave.
